Luckwell Election

Sorry for the lack of pictures this week. It has flown by!
Year 2 took part in the 'Luckwell' election this week. We all listened to the candidates manifestoes, made our decision and then filled in a ballot paper. After the votes were counted it was revealed that Patrick Rogers had won! Patrick will now have one of his 'wishes' made true.

We all wrote a story this week based on The Owl who was afraid of the dark. This was a 'sustained' story and was longer than any of the stories we have written before. It was a real challenge but the stories are great!

In numeracy our unit was 'Data Handling'. We sorted, grouped and then created a tally chart of the different coloured smarties in a tube. We have also been interepreting data fom graphs and tables.

Our topic work is going well...next week we will be tasting some brazilian foods and also creating some Brazilian pictures on 'Paint'.

Making shapes!

Last week year 2 began to really get their teeth into their new topic 'Brazil'. We looked at a map of Brazil and identified the geographical features such as the Amazon river and the rainforest.
We also learnt about the destruction of the rainforest and what we could do to help.
In PE we practised our Samba dance but before that we did a warm up. Here we are making shapes in groups. We made a traingle, square, circle, a number 6 and even a slide!

Year 2 have had great first week back. They all seem to have grown up so much over the holidays. They've been working hard and co-operating better than ever!
This week year 2 had their first golden time - this is a special time when the children can choose to do fun learning activities.
This Friday we decided to decorate the playground with chalk and paint! Did you see our drawings? There was a penguin family, a roaring dragon and even a St.George's flag!

Samba and birds of prey

On Tuesday year 2 had their Brazil topic 'wow'. This was a Samba drumming and dancing session. We enjoyed making ALOT of noise with the drums and all learned a special carnival dance.

On Thursday morning we saw the welsh birds of prey. They were magnificent! Jaie and Anya held the Eurasian Owl.

Well done to the children for working so hard this term. Thank you to all of the parents and carers for your support. Have a lovely Easter everyone!

Arts and crafts!

This week year 2 have been getting very creative! In maths we have been learning about fractions. The children had to design a poster showing a whole, half, 1 quarter and 3 quarters of a shape.

On Friday it was the Easter Craft day run by the PTFA. Year 2 made an easter basket and a picture frame.

We also began to prepare our 'lifecycle' boards for when we will be adding the 3D features next week.

Friday, 12 March 2010

Last week we began our topic 'journey of a frog' which involves learning about living things and life processes. We watched some videos about lifecycles and then went on a minibeast safari in the school grounds. We found loads of living things! Woodlice, a centipede, worms, worms, a slug and some eggs on the underside of a leaf.

In Re this week we have been learning about 'special clothes'. We learnt about the special shawl and hat that jewish men wear when they pray.

On Thursday it was 'World Book Day'. We all dressed up as a book character and did some fun activities from the website.
