Making music!

This week year 2 have had a music week. We began by exploring instruments and deciding which instruments we thought produced a 'hero' sound or a 'villain' sound. We put the instruments into different boxes when we had decided.
We listened to some pieces of music and decided if they sounded hero like or villain like. We recognised some of the pieces from films like 'Indianna Jones' and 'Star Wars'. We then worked in groups to compose our own pieces of music. When you come to our exhibition later in the term you can decide for yourselves if it is hero or villain music!

Who was Blackbeard?

We have been working really hard in year 2 this week! After discovering that the mystery letter and items belonged to Blackbeard we have been working hard at home and school to find out as much as we can about him. We discovered that he was not actually a very nice person and is definitely the villain in our topic! The children have bought in all sorts of books and information they have collected from the internet. Well done year 2!
During the week we sorted fictional characters into heroes and villains. We enjoyed this because there were characters such as Batman and Underdog amongst the pictures.
In Numeracy we have been working on place value. Here are spheres group partitioning 3 digit numbers - tricky stuff!
We also found out about Mary Seacole this week. She was a kind and heroic nurse who looked after soldiers in the Crimean war. Magic Grandad took us on an adventure to a battlefield to see her at work. We were impressed and admired her bravery.

Our first week in Year 2!

We have had a great start to year 2. It has been 'building learning communities' week so we have been playing lots of games and doing activities which develop our skills for working as part of a team. One of the games was 'tangles' which involved everybody linking hands across, around and even underneath each other! Then we had to work together to get out of the tangle.
We had a class photo taken by Mrs Shepherd, see if you can spot it in the school foyer. It might look a little bit different to this one!
On Thursday something very excited happened. Mrs. Hicks came to year 2 to show us a bottle that she found floating in the estuary and a box that had washed up on the banks when she had been travelling in from Shirehampton that morning. Inside the box were lots of mysterious objects which looked like they might belong to a pirate. Inside the bottle was a very old, tattered letter which gave us some clues as to who the box belonged to. We were instructed to go out to the playground and collect letters which spelt out the owners name. When had them all they spelt out Blackbeard! We have lots of things we would like to find out about this notorious pirate!
Next week we should be able to tell you lots of interesting facts all about Blackbeard.
